 October 2009

Hello everyone,

Where did the summer go?   It seems as if Thanksgiving will be upon us before we know it.  We just wanted to update you on the “goings on” here at Sojourner Farms and let you know what products we still have available.

As many of you already know, Andy Bennett joined us as a farm helper late this spring.  His wife Stephanie and son Sylvan also came aboard as Saturday Farmers Market helpers. Andy and Stephanie’s help has been invaluable and has allowed us to have a presence at the Olean (REAP) Farmers Market at JCC and to continue expanding the farm.

We’re now up to 20 head of beef (up from 10) and will be processing 4 beef this fall, contact us if you would like a side of beef.  We are now also raising pigs year round.  Our first batch of the season (late October) is sold out but we will have a second batch up for grabs in either January or February 2010. We are taking orders now and look forward to hearing from you.  We have increased the number of laying hens to just over 100 birds which are presently laying 8-9 dozen eggs daily.  Please spread the news about our delicious eggs to your co-workers, neighbors and relatives.

The bees have also been busy and we have a limited amount of raw honey available.

All in all, 2009 has been a good year thus far although we have had some challenges.  Our local fox family did quite a job thinning out our broilers this summer and hopefully won’t be paying us a visit again for a long time. While the weather was OK for growing grass, it was not ideal for saving hay.  If everything always went smoothly, then it wouldn’t be farming would it… and we’d probably have an overabundance of farmers (yeah right!).

We’ve been mulling over a few ideas about potential future avenues of expansion on the farm to better serve you and expand our market.  Stay tuned as we may be asking for your input later this winter once the snow flies and we spend more time indoors than out.  We hope you all enjoy the rest of the fall season and please let us be the first to wish you  Health, Peace, and Happiness this Holiday Season!
